What I learned in May

This past month I learned:

To listen before I garden.  I was about to reach inside a folded up bag of seed starting soil in the greenhouse when I heard a buzzing sound.  I peeked inside the bag carefully to find a very angry wasp AND a nest!  Thankfully the buzzing alerted me to use caution (yeah, the mash the top down on the bag, squeal a little, drag it outside the greenhouse and squeal again kind of caution) before opening the bag and letting the crazy thing out.

I also learned to look before I garden.  A few days ago I took down my garden apron from the hook to bring it inside to launder.  Because of the above lesson I decided to check the four pockets.  Another wasp nest.  Me and the honey bees are on great terms.  Me and the wasps - not so much.

Some substitute dental hygienists have a way of making you feel really crummy about yourself, (sparking visions of my teeth falling out imminently).   My usual ones are so encouraging.  I prefer the latter : )  They both state the same things but their delivery is key and so is my response in following through with their "suggestions".

Our neighbor has a boatload of tomatoes she planted from seed.  She invited me to see them a couple weeks ago.  She very cleverly took an unused wooden boat and filled it with her young tomatoes and placed old windows on top to create her own mini greenhouse.  In a boat.  A literal boatload of tomatoes!

Walking through doors God opens for you can be scary but always worth it on the other side.

You can make your own toothpaste!  As a kid there were times we ran out and used the baking soda and water method.  Not exactly a fan.  But I am also not a fan of toothpastes (that I put inside my mouth a few times a day mind you) made overseas.  I recently came across several recipes that include a bit of coconut oil for consistency, the standard baking soda for grit and essential oils such as peppermint or cinnamon for flavoring as well as other optional ingredients.  I think it is worth a try!  (The results also seem favorable which may impress the hygienist - you think?)

Happy June!  I hope it is just the start of what ends up being a wonderful summer for you all!

What about you?  What have you learned this past month?

  1. Oh! The toothpaste sounds lovely :). I learned the value of safety equipment--my husband would have sustained more than just a broken clavicle and wrist if hadn't been wearing his helmet, elbow pads and knee pads when he crashed his bicycle.

  2. Oh my goodness, Mindy, the wasps are plotting against you! I remember being at a concert one time and being inundated with wasps. We killed a few of them and that was a big mistake. The next thing we knew all their friends were seeking revenge and actually drove us out of there, lol.
I love the boatload of tomatoes. She needs some shrimp on the BBQ and she's in heaven.
Everyone is getting into essential oils. Perhaps it's time I investigated those again. They certainly are popular. My friend vacuums her house with lavender in the vacuum and it leaves the whole house smelling so nice!
As always, such a pleasure to visit you, Mindy. Hope your week is wonderful :)

  5. Hi Mindy, enjoy your what I've learned this month posts. Sounds like those wasps are giving you a hard time, a couple of years ago when we came back to Oregon for the summer there was a hornest nest in the ground in my garden. I did not realize it and was tilling the ground with my shovel...boy did that make them mad. Did not realize I could still move that fast. Anyway June should be another great month. Take care.

  6. Oh my goodness...those bees and wasps can certainly ruin your day! I can hardly believe it is already June...half the year is over! Have a wonderful Wednesday day and "bee" safe (pun intended) :)

  7. Hi Mindy! You must be a very sweet young lady, those bees are attracted to you for sure!! I'd be doing more than squealing by the way...

Love the 'boatload' of tomatoes! So cute :) and I also love the walking through scary doors. Those are usually the most rewarding ones. Let's join arms and sashay right through to the plans God has for us!
On to a new month of lessons,
    Ceil

  8. What I learned in May:
I have a very talented 14 year old grandson--He built an Adirondack chair from scratch!
Expect the unexpected--I''ll be having surgery in June!
I can downsize even more than I already did! All those extra chairs I MIGHT need someday are headed out the door!

  9. Oh my! Wasps are scary, but I sure like the idea of a boatload of tomatoes-so clever! I am learning that the fruit of the Spirit all come from HIM, not my trying to whip myself into shape. Whew.
