Octobers
I AM so glad to live in a world where there are Octobers. (And Anne of Green Gables...sigh...love that book!)I am also so glad, and oh so thankful, to live in a world that has came so far in the advancement of breast cancer treatment and to have my Mom and Aunt Wendy (both breast cancer survivors/thrivers) here with me to celebrate this October and more to come. We have a strong family history of breast cancer and they have lost their grandma and two cousins to the disease.
I went for my yearly mammogram a couple weeks ago and am happy to report my results letter contained normal results. I pray for those whose letters contained other news.
If you have never had a mammogram and have a family history of breast cancer, or are age 40 or over, I would strongly encourage you to consult your doctor and schedule one this month. They are only slightly uncomfortable and the feeling only lasts moments. Early detection is key.
I would also encourage those who purchase breast cancer awareness products to do just a bit of research to see how much money, if any, goes to actual breast cancer research or funding for breast health services. There are great products out there.
October is a month of pumpkins and it's a good time to think about the health of the two "pumpkins" your body was blessed with : )
Wishing you all many more Octobers~

Good advice! That's wonderful that your mom and auntie are survivors!!! I go every January. My bday present to myself. :)
ReplyDeleteGood for you Nancy! I love that you do it as a gift to yourself - perfect way to look at it.
DeleteThanks for your reminder! I haven't had the ol' pumpkins checked this year. ;) (she said with a smile and a whisper)
ReplyDeleteI have been doing a lot of whispering lately... : )
DeleteHi Mindy! Thank goodness for early detection and treatment, you have a lot to be thankful for! Congrats for getting your mammogram too. I worked a long time in an OB/GYNE office and remember having to 'sell' the yearly mammogram. So many people fear it, or think they just don't have enough time.
ReplyDeleteI am with Anne of Green Gables...love the fall!
Happy Thursday :)

Fear is a huge factor and I have to say it creeps in for me every once in a while, especially with my family history. Have a great weekend!
DeleteGreat post and reminder, Mindy. My sister is a breast cancer survivor and I am so thankful for that. Because of that, my mammo is a stressfu, stressful time, and I bet yours is too. Glad you got a good report!
ReplyDeleteYes Susan, the stress tends to creep in now and again but I know early detection is key. I have also found taking someone along for the ride (my daughter) helps and then we go for lunch or something fun after. Thanking God with you for your sister!
DeleteOh gosh I really need to get a mammogram.
ReplyDeleteLately I've been wanting to get one because I do not do it annually
and as I get older I want to be mindful of my health
but sometimes fear creeps in.
Good for your Mom and Aunt
for surviving.
Hope you can push the fear aside and just go for it Ann. October is the perfect month to get screened. The place I go locally even gives out free pens and has a table of goodies for women but like I shared above, it is also nice to treat yourself on that day. We all need some motivation : )
